Artwork Guide and FAQ's
We’ve tried to make for you a quick and easy read for setting up your designs for print, by making sure your artwork is set up correctly, we insure a faster proofing process, which in turn leads to your printed product being delivered on time or sooner.
Please consult our Artwork Guide below if you are struggling with setting up your Artwork files. If you’re still unsure please Contact Us and a member of our team will be more than happy to help guide you through the whole process.
It is important to allow a 3mm bleed area around all edges of the finished size of your artwork, this area will be trimmed off, this area gives a little bit of leeway when it comes to trimming your printed product to its finished size, allowing that area to bleed off insures images are printed all the way to the edge.
A safe area inside the finished size is also advised, so giving yourself at least a 5mm margin around the inside of your finished artwork will insure no text is trimmed off or laying too close to the trimmed edge of your print.
Bleed and margins should be set up for all your artwork files and for some, such as folded products, stitched booklets, large-format printing, plus others, you will need to adjust your margins and bleeds to accommodate for the folds, printing and larger size. We are here to help if you are confused.
The last thing you want is your product to arrive and you notice the fonts are all wrong and look nothing like you saw on your screen. In order to make sure all your fonts and texts are printed as intended, it is important to save out your artwork files with fonts embedded into the file or outlined to graphics. By doing so, fonts won’t be substituted for another font.
We’ve found that saving all your files as a PDF file format will have the least chance of messing with the fonts of your design. Most programs these days will have an option to Save… or Export… as a PDF file format.
All artwork that is designed for print will be either made up of graphics (vectors) or images (rasters).
Vectors are computer generated graphics, which makes them great for printing as they will always give a crisp, clean and accurate printing results, they can be scaled to any size and still hold their quality, fonts and logos are an example of vector graphics.
Raster images on the other hand, are made up of pixels and depending on the amount of pixels on each image, will depend on how well your images will print. For most sizes, you’ll find that images of 300ppi or higher are fine, for large-format 150ppi is preferred. Again this is something we can help you with if you get confused.
While designing it is important to work in the CMYK colour mode, by doing so, colours will match up more accurately from screen, to when you receive your finished printed product. If you haven’t done so already change your design document to CMYK colour mode or make sure your saving your files out in the CMYK colour mode and not RGB.
We advise saving all your artwork files in the PDF file format under the certified PDF/x1a:2001 doing so insures no transparency issues during printing and flattening your document to comply with certified printing standards.
We will also accept the following file formats: JPEG, PNG, BMP, SVG, AI, PSD, EPS.
If you have designed your artwork using a Microsoft piece of software, you should have an option to Save… or Export… your artwork as a PDF file format.
